I was startled to read today that Jesus — yes, THAT Jesus — may have been the child born from a Roman raping of his mother, Mary.

We all know Jesus was recently found dead in His grave, but where is this “child of rape” story coming from and who is telling it in public?

The answer is, “Basic Instinct” director Paul Verhoeven, who has written a new book:

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands – “Basic Instinct” director Paul Verhoeven has written a book that contradicts biblical teaching by suggesting that Jesus might have been fathered by a Roman soldier who raped Mary.

Marianna Sterk of the publishing house J.M. Meulenhoff said the book includes several ideas that run contrary to Christian faith, including the suggestion that Jesus could be the son of a Roman soldier who raped Mary during a Jewish uprising against Roman rule in 4 B.C.

The book also claims that Judas Iscariot was not responsible for Jesus’ betrayal, she said.

The movie director’s claims were greeted with some skepticism among those who have dedicated their careers to studying the life of Jesus. One issue is that there is very little information about the life of Jesus outside of the Gospels. The Gospels as understood by Christians for nearly 2,000 years do not support Verhoeven’s ideas.

Is it possible Jesus was the product of a Roman raping?

Is it improper for us to even consider the idea?

Is Jesus made stronger or weaker in the deep analysis and fanciful wondering about his power, impact and birth on earth?

  1. You may be right about that, arin, but I think the discussion is certainly one worth having, eh?

  2. Wow, that’s something David!
Personally, this doesn’t bother me – in fact it is way more “acceptable” than a “virgin mother”.

  3. I also find this challenge to doctrine an invigorating thought, Katha! I realize the myth shatters in the shadow of a Roman father — but perhaps that line of questioning can help expand our understanding of history.

  4. Dr. Marcello Craveri in his “Life of Jesus” (1967 ) , p.20 notes: (1) According to a passage in The Talmud the actual father of Jesus was a Roman soldier named Panther, (2) There is in Bingerbrueck in Germany the gravestone of a Roman soldier named Tiberius Julius Abdes Panther who belonged to a cohort garrisoned in Palestine around the time of the birth of Jesus, but (3) Epiphanius made Panther the father of Joseph.

  5. No Jewish father in the history of that religion would have believed his daughter if she has said she was pregnant and that, “God did it.”
The “virgin Mary” concept was a mistranslation from the original Greek into Latin and was canonized as a lie by the early Catholic Church.
What ever good intentions “Good Christians” may have towards benefiting people are negated by the lies which the religion is based upon including Resurrection, Heaven, and Sin. Their lies are the Hell on earth they are stuck with and creating.

  6. It might be a good idea to keep in mind that Hannah (Saint Anne) also claimed that Mary was an immaculate conception.

  7. Whoever though such trash could be said obout the Son of God, Jesus born because of mary being raped of a roman soldier, what trash. no ifs ands or buts about JESUS was born of a virgin, nothing wrong with you guys your only trying to pick holes in the Holy Scriptures & destroy its teaching. Friends this will never happen for His word will stand forever. Amen. but this stuff about my JESUS makes me MAD because HE is truly the SON OF GOD. Anyone trying to make such a movie about Jesus will surely end up in hell.
