I first noticed the phenomenon of the sticker left intentionally on the baseball cap a few years ago when I was living in Seattle and visiting New York. It may have been going on longer than that but like many things, I could not unsee that which I had seen and I noticed it with increasing frequency once i had actually moved back to New York.
When I had a car that I drove regularly in New Jersey, I used to buy bumper stickers with the intention of putting them on. I never put them on, partially because of something my brother said about having your car stick out. What makes it all the more interesting is that I was ultimately glad that I did not put a sticker on the car because of an observation that I made while attending Phish shows from 1995-2000.
It started off innocently enough. A forty-five cent Pekkle sticker book here, a dollar Pochacco memo pad there. Looking over the growing mass that I now have, I have to wonder how I got here.
