Yesterday I had to find a new radio station to have on all day since Howard Stern is gone and his old station in New York plans to move from a classic rock format to all talk in January. I looked around all the radio choices and picked Jack FM on 101.1 (be careful if you click that link because you’ll be overwhelmed with loud audio) in New York because I’d heard a lot about the Jack-FM-Format-as-iPod experience.

I love Jack FM because it feels programmed just for me. I get great variety and excellent songs. The “Jack” announcer is annoying and robotic but I listen for the music not for the talk.

    Hi Karvain!
Yes, in New York, the Jack FM format has not done well yet — but that was before I started listening. Heh!
I think there still may be some hangover resentment to getting rid of the Oldies format on CBS-FM in New York but everywhere else Jack FM has been on the radio, great success has followed.

“Old” is relative, Karvain! A lot of the music is from the 80’s and 90’s but for some of us that’s as recent as yesterday.

  3. Oooo, I love my ’80s music! 😀
They took away an ’80s station here in Greenville a little more than a year ago, and I was so pissed! Especially since they replaced it with a contemporary Christian/”positive country” format. Blegh! We already have two country stations and a contemporary Christian station. We didn’t need another!
There is a station that I can get in my car that’s out of Charlotte that plays ’80s, ’90s and current, but they talk a lot.
Everytime I can’t find music I wanna hear on the radio, I still mourn for my ’80s station.

    Hey, Karvain!
WFUV plays a lot of “Old” music! Ha!
Yes, I think WFUV is one of the best stations in the New York area. When I lived in the Bronx it was MY radio station. WFUV is Fordham University’s radio station and I wish I could pull it in from Jersey City but the signal is too weak.

    Hi Carla!
Yes, the 80’s was a great time musically and I miss those songs on the radio.
There’s no Oldies or Classic Rock station now in the New York radio market. Those are gaping holes that need to be filled soon.
It looks like you can find a local Jack FM station and also listen to it live on the web:

Thanks for the pointer, Karvain! That WFUV stream used to be disconnected. I’ll check in with them again today to see if they’re still playing all the good stuff!

That sounds cool, Mik, I’ve been listening to Jack FM all day and it’s a super station. It has all the music I want and I don’t have to put up with any inane DJ trying to fill time or keep a job.

  9. I usually listen to rock radio, but getting sick of the local station ridiculous lack of variety, and tiresome dj’s, I began listening to 92.9 Jack FM in Buffalo, and I liked what I heard for the most part. No DJ chatter or boring calls, just music. Now if only they could do away with the commericals like WLIR did, which i prefered listening to when I lived on Long Island.

    Hi Michael —
I haven’t switched away from Jack FM yet — I, too, really enjoy the lack of a live announcer. The focus is on music and the shuffle of songs is refreshing.

  12. I LOVE JACK FM BECAUSE YOU PLAY SONGS THAT I HAVEN’T HEARD IN A LONG TIME AND IT BRINGS BACK SOME GREAT MEMORIES. THE KIND OF MEMORIES THAT PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE AND IN YOUR HEART. THANK YOU!
