Cloverfield is a new monster movie set in New York City that —
intentionally or not, brings back, audibly and semiotically — the
horrors of 9/11.

Entertainment does not exist in a vacuum.

Audiences live in the real world and can only suspend disbelief if there isn’t too harsh of a connection to reality.

Cloverfield,
and its destruction of NYC, cuts too close to a common bone — and the
result is an effort in bad taste that leaves a pungent sting in the
mouth.
