The tide of uncontrolled anger on the internet — think Juicy Campus and FML and Lori Drew as previously excoriated examples — rises anew in a wave of awkward hatred as Dirty Phonebook crashes against our moral shore.

Dirty Phonebook is a new social networking website that lets anonymous cowards say nasty things — we have no idea if what they claim is true or not — about unsuspecting people by attaching a real phone number to a sniper character assassination.

Here’s a random shot of the sort of “content” you’ll find on that site:

Is the site real?  Or are these published cruelties an invention of misguided minds intended to merely provoke website hits?

Are these sorts of social sites funny or just mean in every intention?

How soon will Dirty Phonebook be sued for slander — and I’m quite certain the “we’re just a common carrier” argument will not protect their vile interests — and they fall into the abysmal flames of public outrage while we write their filthy obituary?

    1. Well, Gordon, someone could take your phone number, enter it into their database and start spewing about you. It’s just that simple and disgusting. Since the phone numbers are published, it seems as if there’s the implicit invitation that visitors to the site should call those numbers to get in on the nasty action.

  1. You’re right that there are some negative comments on the site, and those are definitely troubling, but after further investigation I also saw some of the following…

    * child support deadbeats being called out…
    * abusers being written about…
    * drug dealers and thieves and other criminals being exposed…
    * serial cheaters getting exposed…

I think there might be some long-term value in this…If I’m going to go out on a date with somebody, don’t I have the right to try and check out if they’re abusive or worse? I don’t have the money to pay some dating service for a background-check or anything.

I would also consider what good can come out of this instead of focusing just on the obvious negative.

    1. You bring up some interesting questions.

My concern with the site is that it is not about vetting the truth of the allegations — the service isn’t called “Verifiable Facts Phonebook” — the intention of the site is found in its name: Spreading the dirt on people.

How do we know people who are anonymously entering information about others are being truthful and not vindictive?

      1. This scumbage group of people will not remove numbers attached to underage people who are being attached by vendictive little a__holes. There is no truth to this low level site. It’s for people who have to trash others to feel better about themselves. I can’t believe they actually have advertisers. I would like to know the webmasters number and where the prick lives.

        1. I feel your frustration, Peter.

Have you done a WHOIS search on the domain name? If it doesn’t reveal the actual name of the domain owner, it should at least give you a technical contact at the hosting service you can use to send an inquiry and to state your quite right case.

    2. How can you possibly know?! These people you’re claiming are being “called out” and “exposed” are actually everyday innocent individuals who are being SLANDARED!!! I don’t see any value whatsoever in this site. Maybe you are one of the cowards actually posting these nasty things against someone who are stalking or just plain jealous of. That’s exactly what I’ve been experiencing. According to DPB, I’m uneducated, criminal, on welfare. The reality: Two college degrees, no criminal record, no welfare. My STALKER is horribly obsessed with my family. I’m actually awaiting an attack from this unknown individual. I was told by an attorney that a John Doe case may be opened against such an individual, then subpoenas sent to DPB, from there, the JOHN DOE name can be modified, then the suit against the poster can go forward. HTH anyone going through this. T

      1. ALL OF US WHO ARE VICTIMS NEED TO MAKE A REPORT COMPLAINT TO THE IRS THE DIRTY PHONE BOOK SITE IS PROFITING OFF OF CYBER BULLYING WHO IS TO SAY THEY ARE NOT COMMITTING TAX EVASION

  2. I typed in my name just to see if there was anything that I should be worried about for my job and I found my cell number linked to dirty phone book. I am absolutely pissed off about this and I want my number off this ridiculous site!

    1. Ella —

Yes, it seems anyone can enter private information about other people — but getting that information removed from the site is difficult. The process should be reversed.

  3. Has anyone successfully removed a number? Is anyone interested in joining a class action lawsuit against this site? I have never seen anything so vicious in my life, and I am trying to get my phone number off of this site.

    1. Thanks for the comment, Eric. Do you have any idea how your number was entered? Have you tried to contact the site directly to demand removal?

      1. I’ve emailed the direct site on removing my number and information. Do you know how to remove it?

      2. I’m really hoping for help on this matter. Please point me in a direction where I can get somewhere, here is my situation…..

I have attempted contact with the administrators of “dirty phone book” on behalf of my girlfriend whose number we found posted after she had been informed of the posting by a user who called her trying to “hook up” as a result of reading the post regarding her. Reading the original posters comments, it was clear to us that they were written by an ex boyfriend of hers. This ex boyfriend included her phone number, place of residence and work information along with an invitation to all readers to call her for the purpose of “hooking up”.
This ex boyfriend, at the time of his original posting as well as beforehand and afterward has had a restraining order placed against him for aggressive stalking behavior he had been displaying toward her during the six months leading up to this “dirty phone book” discovery.
My attempt to contact the administrators included a copy of the protection order and information for the reader to verify it’s authenticity in the records of King County, WA. I have heard absolutely NOTHING in return and this was over 6 months ago.
I’m interested in gaining written proof from the webmaster of who the original poster is so that we might use this proof in having this protection order extended.
Not to go too far into details, but in short, by him petitioning others to call her he has directly violated this protection order and continues to do so as he continues to post and our hands are tied until we can somehow illicit a response from “dirty phone book” and get them to understand the severity of this situation and cooperate.
Can anyone help me? I would not only have my purpose but would be willing to help get the site shut down as well.

        1. my daughter is involved in the same situation. I would appreciate any info about getting removed.

    2. I also want a number removed & was thinking about a lawsuit….I want to be involved !!

      1. Please involve me in any kind of lawsuit. This has put my daughter in serious danger!!

    3. I am listed on there and would like to know how to take my number off. It has a link to facebook and other personal information. I do not know who did this or why but have emailed to be removed with no response.

      1. I have tried everything! The man is a scumbag and everytime you click on his link to see if you are still there, he makes money through his advertisers. I will join any class action lawsuit.

    4. I’d like to know the very same thing. This is absolutely considered ONLINE BULLYING! I recently found out that my new married name was posted on this site in reference to an old martial arts instructor and his wife. Funny thing is it was my ex that hinted it (which it think he’s the “anonymous” prick that posted it seeing is he is the only one that would know my new last name). It’s slanderous to everyone and not to mention that given our split 4 years ago, his bitterness has him using our child as his tool…in this case to be slanderous towards a parent in an attempt to seek full custody when the child turns 12. So the manipulation that goes along with this kind of site is far deeper and potentially more damaging and vicious then people may realize.
I would join a class suit. Especially when it comes to online bullying in this day and age. I’m in.

      1. The man is the worst trash. There is not a thing you can do because freedom of the press. Softlayer and Go- Daddy will do nothing for you. Go back into the comments and you will find the ditbags phone number andd address. If any one sues, I am in!

  4. My name, phone number, and email are listed on there. I have no idea how my information was placed on their site. I have emailed them 3 times and submitted the “forgot password” request 3 times and gotten no response. There must be a way to crash this site. Someone hack them and bring them down.

    1. I don’t understand how the site is able to keep going. There must be some way for people to have their private information removed.

    2. They have a bot that crawls for publically available information online (usually through Facebook). Replying to any post moves it to the top of the website so I suggest you leave it alone.

  5. Anyone figure out how to remove phone numbers/contact info? Someone posted my phone number as well as Facebook profile. Although Facebook privacy settings are on, I do not want future employers seeing this website containing my information. Why does this site even exist?!

    1. I’m having the same problem and I’m furious! I don’t even have my phone number listed on my Facebook page, and it’s completely private, which leads me to believe that some a**hole that knows me went out of their way to submit my information. I’ve contacted them several times within the past few weeks, and have still heard no responses. I found two other e-mail addresses on their website (besides the info one – info@dirtyphonebook.com): jobs@dirtyphonebook.com and invest@dirtyphonebook.com. So I say we bug them at every address until something is done!

[Comment edited by David W. Boles to remove curse word.]

      1. I believe the website uses a bot to gather phone numbers that have been posted on public facebook pages such as event pages etc. My information was posted and I do not want employers viewing my name on a website like that. No comments were left but I would have this trashy website come up in the search results of my name.

  6. The site is a valuable tool. Seems there are alot of people on here who got busted out for being dirty hamsters. I have hooked up with my special partner on here

  7. my number is on there, is there anything i can do to sue them? i want it off now. PISSING ME OFF. saying my sister is a slut and all.

  8. I’m glad I’m not alone in this. Nothing rude posted about me but my personal information is on there, and I think that this website is a major security issue. Suppose I was a victim of stalking and went to great lengths to keep personal information. Anyone who knows me can go on this site and post where I live, my email, my work location. That seems extremely dangerous.

    1. Hi Laura —

Some people who support that site spammed this blog with links and specious arguments, that were not published, defending its purpose and use.

Their main argument seemed to center on the idea of “prior restraint” —

      http://definitions.uslegal.com/p/prior-restraint/

      — and that law abiding people shouldn’t be afraid of the site.

I have no idea if prior restraint is their official defense or not, but at least it gives us a place to start digging.

      1. Prior restraint rule only applies before defamatory information has been published. Seeing as defamation has already occurred, it’s irrelevant.

  9. Well, it’s September, and the site is still up. I was almost gonna share my outrage of the site with my friends on facebook. However, my common sense got a hold of me, and I would have been showing an extra couple hundred people the site, thus giving them more traffic. And the possibility of my number getting on there, faster…

  11. Listen this is a bullsh*t site that needs to be taken down it can put a lot of people in danger.

    1. I don’t know how well suing would go, but I came up with a plan that might be equally effective. And it’s almost definitely legal. If you go to the site, you can search any number and use the site to call them for free. I say we get people to use this feature to call expensive 1-900 numbers. I don’t know if the free calling is hosted by the site or if they use some kind of outside service, but if we get enough people doing this we could run their costs up thousands, or maybe tens of thousands, of dollars. If it’s hosted by the site, the cost could be too much to keep the site up, and if its an outside service, they might drop this site as a client because it’s not worth it to keep them. Just call the number and leave the computer running for a long time. Make a sandwich, take a walk, go to work, do whatever. And if you like phone sex, this is a chance to get it for free. We may not take down the whole site but it will at least do some pretty serious financial damage.

      1. Of course, this only works if 1-900 numbers operate by billing the phone number and not a credit card, but I think a lot of them do.

  12. The worst part about the site is that they use a bot to crawl for information that people have posted publically on Facebook. Many innocent people will discover their phone number on the site (usually after googling themselves) and reply to it, which immediately brings it to the top to be harassed by trolls lurking the website. Now, a simple Google search of that person’s name will bring up nasty comments about them.

    1. The worst thing about this site is the phone numbers once created are never removed even though the original owner of the number may have changed it months ago, the phone number is then recycled by the service provider to a new user who my print hundreds of dollars of stationary and advertising only later to be getting calls from heavy breathers because of a old dirty phone book listing. I would be happy to join a lawsuit

      1. The guy is a pig and lives in New York. He should give people the opportunity to opt out. Don’t click on him, he gets money for that!

        1. http://relationshaping.com/2010/05/26/dirty-phonebook-gives-you-the-finger/#comment-2846

This link will give you additional conversations. If you scroll down you will get his phone number and address in New York. I have talked to everybody up the line to stop this idiot. Someone please call an investigative reporter from a prominent New York Paper so we can get rid of this pig. He needs to be exposed “Big Time”. We all have been trying and getting the job done.

    1. YES!!!!!!!!! I’m being accused of posting dirty things I didn’t post about a girl on the website, and would really like info on how to delete the comments/profile stuff from dirty phonebook. I’ve been spamming them with emails and i haven’t heard anything back yet. Please post anything you find out about removing someones information from this site. it would help out greatly….

  13. HELP!!! for real…. I’m being accused of posting dirty things I didn’t post about a girl I used to know on dirty phonebook, and would really like info on how to delete the comments/profile stuff from dirty phonebook asap before things get out of hand. Regardless of how our friendship ended she is a nice person and doesn’t deserve being slandered on this website.

  14. That site is terrible. I just received a call and was told the person found my number on there and they wanted me to talk dirty. It is also 4 something in the morning. This is just unacceptable.

  15. My phone number is on here and I receive harassing phone calls from people getting my number all the time. I want to file a report against this website because my Facebook account was posted on here. It’s ridiculous.

    1. I’m a victim of this horrible website too. Did you resolve your problem? What can I do??

  16. My son is so upset about what someone wrote that was all lies, I am afraid this is putting him into deep depression. I need to get this off a.s.a.p.
