We know if you’re a man — you’re already dying of prostate cancer — but the more recent news-that-makes-us-go-limp from the BBC — is that if you’re male, you also stand a 2 percent chance of going through your own sort of “menopause.”
Three sexual symptoms – poor morning erection, low levels of sexual desire and erectile dysfunction were linked to low testosterone levels. Depression, fatigue and an inability to perform sexual activity were also linked.
But some symptoms commonly cited as being indications men are going through a “menopause” including changes in sleeping patterns, poor concentration, feeling worthless, and anxiety were found to have no link to low testosterone levels.
The condition, also called late-onset hypogonadism, was also found to be linked to poor health and obesity. Hypogonadism is a condition where the testes fail to work properly, affecting hormone levels.
The immediate cure for “male menopause” is not a testosterone patch or injection — it must be an ongoing effort to stay healthy and active and we get there by the daily intervention against our worst habits.
Stay away from sugar.
Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
Forget the meat and eat more live vegetables and fruit.
Too often, we seek comfort in the popped pill or in the needle injection — and sometimes the bottom of a vodka bottle — but those behavioral masks are only set to fool and fail us in the end.
Staying ahead of the onslaught of the aging bell curve requires us to be proactive in redefining how we choose to live a life of the mind — while also protecting the common vessel of our bodies without losing the strength and stamina to always soldier onward.
