It’s all well and good when celebrities like Wycleff Jean try to make the world a better place by telling other people what to do. Talk is not just cheap, as some say — it is actually free. You can have all the brilliant notions you want and just go around telling people about them, but it won’t actually necessarily make anything happen.

When I was a child, I was intrigued by events such as Live Aid, which persuaded people to send money to send food to starving people in Africa. I thought it was really great that celebrities were helping get money there, but sometimes I wondered how much money they gave — and did they spend any time in Africa helping in a more practical way?

Kevin Costner has been making things happen through action. Costner was inspired to action by the disastrous crashing of the Exxon Valdez and the subsequent spillage of oil all over the Prince William Sound.

Costner has spent the past 15 years and more than $20 million of his own money into developing the oil separator, a powerful centrifuge that he claims can separate oil from water and dump the oil into a holding tank, leaving the water 99 percent clean of crude.

Instead of being another speaker, telling us something we already know — “Folks, we have got to do something about this!”– Costner took the initiative to actually make that something happen. Here is Costner demonstrating the spectacular technology.

We can only hope that the devices are deployed in time to stop unprecedented damage from being done. Let the cleanup commence!

Bravo, Gordon! This is such great news. Kevin is not an ordinary star. He’s been proactively working in private on matters that truly affect the world. Now he rides to our rescue. Fantastic!

    1. That’s right, David. Not only this but he hasn’t taken every opportunity while developing the technology to brag about what a great person he was for doing it — the emphasis is on doing the right thing, not getting acclaim for it.
