by This is a story about a man named Rick Perry who has decided that the past should stay in the past and that things that he may have written in the past should have no bearing on his campaign for being president in the future.
Rick Perry wrote a book called Fed Up! — a book in which he basically says that many things the people of the United States find quite helpful — Medicare, minimum wage, and other such things — are unconstitutional.
He doesn’t even seem to grasp the reason behind the Civil War had more to do with slavery than government overreaching.
Now that he is in full presidential campaign mode, however, Perry seems to be treating the book just a little bit differently.
Even though initially he was talking with people on his campaign tour about the book, the book mentions seem to have dried up entirely — almost as though he is disavowing the book.
The book, [presidential campaign director] Mr. Sullivan said, “is a look back, not a path forward.”
It was written “as a review and critique of 50 years of federal excesses, not in any way as a 2012 campaign blueprint or manifesto,” Mr. Sullivan said.
Are we to believe the Rick Perry that wrote the book and talked about it in front of excited cheering audiences, or the Rick Perry about whom it is said that he meant the book as a review and critique and not a blueprint for the future?
When even Rick Perry of the book states that he is not interested in higher office and he is happy with the office he has and then goes on to run for that very same higher office, we begin to think that we live in a world with two Rick Perrys — one who wrote the book and isn’t running for president, and one who never wrote a book and is on the campaign trail now!
Will the real Rick Perry please tell us which one of these Ricks you are?
It’s an astonishing story, Gordon. You’d think Perry would want to disavow any semblance to G. W. Bush — instead of racing away from his own words!
