The Harvest: Canada’s MAID Program, Eugenics, and the Commodification of Despair

When a state administers death as a healthcare service and then discovers the dead have commercially valuable parts, the question is no longer about dignity. It is about inventory. Something has gone structurally wrong in Canada, and the evidence is no longer ambiguous. In 2024, 16,499 Canadians died through the country’s Medical Assistance in Dying program, accounting for 5.1 percent of all deaths nationally. Since legalization in 2016, the cumulative total has surpassed 76,000. One in every twenty Canadian deaths is now a state-administered killing, dressed in the language of compassion and categorized by Health Canada not as a cause of death, but as a “health service.” That semantic sleight of hand is doing heavier lifting than any euphemism should be asked to bear.

2024 Return to Happy Jack Mountain

Janna and I made a pilgrimage to Happy Jack Mountain near North Loup and Scotia, Nebraska this summer. Okay, maybe Happy Jack is more hill than a mountain, but because Nebraska (Otoe for “Flat Water”) is pretty dang flat, any rolling hill easily becomes a mountainous monument in memory. Happy Jack sits over the chalk mines below, and we’ll get to that wonder of the valley in a future article. The goal of us trekking up Happy Jack — me, for the second time, and for Janna, first — was to land in front of a giant, wooden cross atop the mountain. Easter services are held under the cross every year, but my question, now as an aged, and somewhat wizened 59-year-old man-child was, and still is, this: WHO IS CLIMBING HAPPY JACK MOUNTAIN ON EASTER MORNING? (the threat of dying is palpably real!)

What the Dead Leave Behind

Every death is a beginning of the end of the beginning of the end. Or something like that; but there is no curiosity more powerful than the clues the dead leave behind as breadcrumb secrets of who they really were during their lives, along with all the curses left behind with the truths of their real, haunting, hidden, desires.

We Burn Our Women and Children on the Altar of Madness

Over the last few months in the USA — and across the world ashore — it appears we now prefer to burn our women and children on the altar of a consecrated, conservative, authoritarian, religioso, madness! It’s Leda and the Swan now embedded forever in The Marble Palace — and there’s no clear way out of separating alarming myth from tragic reality. Now the majority women don’t control their bodies anymore. Now the minority swans own their bodies.

When They Go Low, We Go Lower!

The Obamas are kind and smart people, but as politicians, their presidency was unfortunate and unsustainable in the residue of an enduring legacy that lived beyond them in true democratic electoral rule — they were bad at getting Democrats elected. People loved President Obama, but that popularity did not transfer to overwhelming legislative successes that matched his election mandate. In fact, Obama spent too much time trying to make peace with Republicans when all they wanted to do was remove him from office. Obama wasted the first two years of the majority he won in the House and Senate and then never recovered after his first midterm election disaster that poisoned the last six years of his presidency.

At the 2016 Democrat convention, Michelle Obama played the morality card against the GOP, by proclaiming, “When they go low, we go high” and that ridiculous phrase never had any power beyond the wish and the fairytale — going high was only the pabulum of early virtue signalling — lacking any substance that did anything to help anyone. Just ask Hillary Clinton how going high worked out for her as president.

What the Obamas, and the Democrats, generally fail to realize is their opponent, the Republicans, are smarter, better organized, craftier, more cruel — the GOP own the courts and they have better lawyers, just ask Al Gore about his presidency — and if Joe Biden hopes to win in 2020, he needs to go LOWER than Donald Trump, not higher, to meet the ferocity of the viciousness that is about to become Mr. Biden over the next two months; and I fear he, and the Democrat leaders, think they’re going to win just because of voting and goodwill, while the election is really going to be won in the streets, bloodlines, the courts, and in a multitude of lawsuits.
