Russell Means was a wounded warrior in the inequal fight for freedom and civil rights between the American Indian and the Federal government. He was a hero to his people and an inspiration to the rest of us. Russell Means died on October 22, 2012 on his beloved Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. He was 72.
It seemed like a long time ago in a state not too far away from me (New Jersey, close in heart and with much family) a governor named Chris Christie told eager listeners that the President of the United States, Barack Obama, was similar to a person who was stumbling around in a dark room looking for a light switch. He was a leader incapable of leading, and as such did not deserve the presidency that he won. That was, in fact, only about two weeks ago — but then something unexpected happened.

In the past, one of the strongest ways that a prosecutor could prove that there had been criminal wrongdoing was to use witnesses. A person or two may have seen a criminal snatching a purse and running off with it. There could have been even more witnesses. On the other hand, it was entirely possible that the witnesses were all fabricated by a shrew prosecutor in search of a win.
We have been taught since childhood that self-harm and suicide are inappropriate and never the solution to any problem. Yet, every year, many of us still decide to end our lives by our own hand.
Why?
Do we kill ourselves because of a lack of coping skills? Do we raise our hand against our minds because we feel helpless and lost? Does turning on the “Off Button” somehow lead to the easing of an inexpressible pain?
