Who's Who, Are You?
Does the world care who you are against all others? Is there really a market out there for any “Who’s Who” book beyond those included on the page? Are you a mystery and an enigma that you feel must be defined and celebrated?

For most of my school life, books were on loan for the year and then returned back to the school. At the beginning of the school year, we were given the books we needed and inscribed our names onto a bookplate which had been pasted into the book when it was originally purchased by the school. I was always very careful with the books I got from the school — it was not my property to do with as I wanted.
The Higher Education Opportunity Act is a 2008 update to the Higher Education Act formed in 1965. The HEOA is important because it is rolling into effect and it gives much more power in the marketplace of ideas to the consumer — students — so enlightened and keen decision-making can take place in the full light of day. Here are some of the general provisions in the 2008 update:

The year was an interesting one, to say the least. It saw me relocating to a more permanent place of dwelling — my futon surfing days are over. It also saw me finding new interests in the music field, including a re-ignition for my passion for vinyl.
I spent my Memorial Day tracking down the jerk who took my hardcopy book — Picture Yourself Learning Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard — and scanned it into a .PDF file for easy downloading on his website. There are few people who believe this sort of behavior is content theft — but let me assure you what was done to my book is a violation of International Copyright Law, it is pirating — and in giving away something for free that my publisher paid me to write and paid to have distributed as a hardcopy book — only ruins the book publishing economy in its core. That means fewer books will be published and fewer authors will want to write books that can so easily be stolen. Here’s a screenshot of the page for my book from the pirate site. The .PDF file size description was the dead giveaway that this site was not selling my hardcopy book.

A little over a year ago, I wrote my first Kindle review, and now it’s time for me to review the new Kindle 2 from Amazon. I am amazed at some of the lousy reviews I’ve read so far of the Kindle 2 — not that the authors don’t like the device, they do — but rather because it’s obvious they have never really used a Kindle every single day as part of their information dissemination system. I use my Kindle all day every day. I pay my own way buying Kindles and content. I apologize upfront for the awful iPhone 3G images of my Kindle — that’s the price we pay for quickness and speed in getting this review online. You can still tell the differences between the first Kindle and the Next Generation, though. The most obvious, and welcome, change in the Kindle 2 is the information bar is now at the top of the screen where it belongs so you can see, upfront, how your Whispernet internet signal is doing and the status of your battery! Images on the Kindle 2 are also deeper and richer than the first iteration.

Another year, another list of favorites, and another year of my still not being Oprah – on the bright side, you know you won’t see any mentions of the va-jay-jay, after that one of course.

We were displeased to learn Columbia University is tumbling down the Google tube:
Columbia University has partnered with Google, Inc. to digitize select public domain printed volumes in the University Libraries’ collections and make them available online using Google Book Search. The digitization project will provide teachers, students, scholars, and readers around the world with an unprecedented ability to search, locate, and read books from the University’s collections. The digital collection resulting from this project significantly advances Columbia’s ability to serve its academic community, as well as readers worldwide.
