We know the healthcare industry is broken, but one thing that has always been a mistaken mainstay in keeping our misbegotten minds and bodies in fit form — is the need to wade into an endless cesspool while attending a doctor’s office. Nay, the cesspool is not our infirm friends and brethren, but the very soggy pond in which we are all left to rot, in situ, for an appointment that shall never arrive.
Today, I’m sad to report that my beloved Herman Miller Aeon Chair finally gave up its seat — and its mesh back and its crippled casters and it decaying rubber arms — and I had to trash it after eight, magnificent, years of dutiful sitting service.
I was on the hunt for a new office chair. The replacement had to be hardy and tough and a good value. I spend 12 hours a day in and out of my office chair, so I needed to make certain the task of sitting would not interfere with my joy of writing.

I have been ruminating on the Clint Eastwood Empty Chair performance at Romney’s GOP convention, and I just can’t help loving what he was trying to do. I’m not kidding or being facetious. What Eastwood did was actually pretty brave and interesting and, while it didn’t really work out in the end — due to poor dramatic structure and lack of a button ending — it was still dangerous and exciting and absolutely real.

McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern is a quarterly literary magazine started by Dave Eggers, originally with the goal of publishing stories of high literary merit that were rejected by other magazines. Eventually, it turned into a mixture of rejects and original submissions and Eggers made sure that every issue was different from the last — one issue came looking like a big stack of mail, for example. Another issue was nothing but graphic art and came wrapped in a giant newspaper comic section with original Sunday Funnies.
Nothing bends the will of the living more than a government-injected death, and with the recent Supreme Court ruling that lethal injection was not cruel and unusual punishment — the killings will continue.
