We are big Warren Haynes fans and Warren’s latest solo album — Man in Motion — is available today for purchase. Warren is in fine form here. His guitar playing is relaxed and thoughtful. He makes every moment count.
Music evolves over time — a musician or band will not write the same kind of music when they start playing as they will be playing a decade later, or two decades later. It’s interesting to look at bands from the past and examine their growth over time and see how they change from album to album. Many times, however, when you are living through those changes it can come as a bit of a surprise and it takes getting used to. This happened to me most recently with the new Iron & Wine album, “Kiss Each Other Clean.”
It seems like it has been a long time since the release of the last Mountain Goats album, 2009’s The Life of the World to Come. While this may not seem like much for the average band, consider that in the early 1990’s there were years in which two albums would come out. Granted these albums were recorded straight to boombox with no production — that didn’t detract from its amazing lyrics or musical quality.
We know too well that Lady Gaga is sometimes not well liked — Camille Paglia scolded her nattering vagina, for example. In some cases, people just are outright mean to her — calling in to question whether or not she has the genitalia of a man or a woman, as though that has any influence on the quality or beauty of the artwork she creates.
I am completely and totally in love with Adele — in the most honorable and humanistic way — and it is my delight to review her latest 21 album. Yes, Adele is a SuperGenius SuperStar from the UK and, yes, she is only 22 years old. Her voice is a throaty, smoky, raspy mix of the Bluesy heartache made famous by Fiona Apple, Rihanna and Janis Joplin.
Joe Bonamassa is back, baby! We were so thoroughly disappointed in his last album — Black Country Communion — because that effort was so un-Joe-like in execution and expectation and style and tone, but today, Joe sets everything right again with the just-dropped release of: Dust Bowl.
In anticipation of the release of the next Mountain Goats album, coming out at the end of the month, I have been listening to the entire back discography of the band and for some reason I have been coming back to this album. Let us consider this magnificent album and the ramifications of its release on the band and the direction that it started to take after it, leading up to the forthcoming album, All Eternals Deck.
