When I was a boy in Lincoln, the contract with a cat was short enough to fit on a matchbook. You fed it in the morning and again at dusk, you cracked the back door, and you let the animal go be an animal. If it came back for breakfast, you had a cat. If it did not, you had a story about a cat. Nobody took its temperature. Nobody weighed it. The idea that a cat would sit on a stainless table once a year while a doctor charted its molars would have gotten you laughed out of the feed store. A cat was livestock with opinions, and Nebraska treated it accordingly.

The Listener Will See You Now

Ambient AI now records the conversation at the hospital bed and the exam table. The microphone is optional, for the moment. The receptionist slid a tablet across the counter and asked, in the bright tone reserved for upgrades, whether I would consent to let the clinic “AI Listen” to the appointment. Percy and Lotty, The Boles Brits, were already complaining inside their carrier, due for the rabies shots the state requires. The pitch was efficiency. The software would listen to my conversation with the veterinarian, transcribe it, and “ambient scribe” the care notes so the doctor could spend less time typing and more time with the animals. I declined. There was a checkbox for that, which I noted with the small relief of a man who has read the next paragraph before signing the first.

Get Thee to a Cattery!

I know Catteries can be uncomplimented on the internets — say, the same way “cat washing” can cause angina for some, but, Janna and I both argue from direct experience, that washing your Cat gives that baby a new life, and unrequited rights in a whole fresh world of cleanliness — and yes, if you want a purebred cat, you’re probably going to have to deal with a Cattery.
