Respecting Adjunct Faculty
We have lived lives of being unappreciated part-time faculty members and we support the American Association of University Professors and their want to bring adjunct faculty up to a higher level of respect and standing in universities:
Today,
48 percent of American faculty serve in part-time appointments, and
non-tenure-track positions of all types account for 68 percent of
faculty appointments. Year after year, the problem gets worse as more
and more faculty jobs are part time or non-tenure track. Faculty
holding these appointments are often poorly compensated–receiving low
wages and few, if any, fringe benefits. Without job security and
academic freedom protections, they are subject to administrative whim.
Students suffer when the majority of faculty are inadequately supported
by their institutions.

Why do so many people fear the truth?
People are frightened of honesty because truths are revealed. The danger in truth is that it wounds with indisputable facts. If you’re unprepared in life to deal with the reality surrounding you — it’s better to not know and to never ask.

A Brief History of Waterboarding
We are having a heated political discussion in the USA this week wondering if waterboarding is torture or not as Michael Mukasey faces a Senate confirmation hearing on his attorney general nomination — but waterboarding has a long history as part of the human core in antiquity:
Waterboarding is a technique in which prisoners are subjected to simulated drowning by binding them to an inclined board, with their feet raised and head a bit below their feet. Then cellophane or cloth is wrapped over a prisoner’s face and water is poured over the person.
Vietnam 1968: In Da Nang, the U.S. military used waterboarding as an interrogation technique:
The Definition of Bad Taste
One of the worst feelings is when you do someone a favor — like getting them a paying gig — and they then betray you by complaining on their blog about the very work you got them.
That sort of behavior is: The Definition of Bad Taste.
If you don’t like the job or appreciate the favor, that’s fine, but keep it to yourself.
No one wants to read about ungrateful complaining on a public blog.
Whine to your friends and bad-mouth — if you must — those who do you favors… out of earshot and eyeshot!
A former beloved professor of mine in graduate school was found of saying this about that sort of betrayer: “I will do nothing to hurt you; but I will also do nothing to help you.”
