New iPads Arrive: Typekit Fonts Now a Blogging Necessity

Today was a busy and glorious day. Our new iPads arrived three days early from China and we enjoyed setting them up via iCloud and experiencing our first, if limited, tastes of LTE on Verizon. In Jersey City, LTE comes and goes in our apartment. Sometimes it flickers to life. Other times, we’re stuck on 3G with no way to understand the why or wherefore of being pressed off the LTE network. Here’s a quickie screenshot I was able to grab of my iPad on LTE with two service bars active. 5.67 Mbps down and 0.19 Mbps up.

Czechoslovakian President Vaclav Havel was First a Playwright

Yesterday, the first President of Czechoslovakia, Vaclav Havel, died.  He was 75.  Havel was also first, a Playwright, and that distinction is important and intimate as he led and saved a new nation.

Relational Retinal Design and the Aesthetics of Food Labels

We learn through our minds, and we take warnings through our senses.  When you want to give quick, concise, information to the human eye with a cultured aesthetic, you use bright colors, and a relational retinal design to drive context that creates meaning.  In the image below, you see the new food label packaging the FDA is proposing for all processed American foods.  You are immediately confused looking at the information.  Are those too many calories or just the right amount for what you’re about to put in your mouth?  You have to calculate your own “DV” maximum percentage for “Sat Fat” and “Sodium.”  You’re left to wonder what the “DV” for 14g of “Sugars” really means in the big picture.
