The Movable Type 4.3 Review
18 months ago, we made the blog publishing switch from WordPress.com to Movable Type. Once we were only Urban Semiotic and now we publish 11 blogs under the Boles Blogs Network banner and nine of those blogs are published with Movable Type. Yesterday, we upgraded our Movable Type installation to version 4.3 and the first thing we noticed was the expanded options for signing in to comment on all our blogs. You can now use your Google account to comment as well as Hatena, Yahoo! JAPAN and livedoor. We’ve already seen a spike in user comments across the blogs network because of this expanded opportunity to sign in and verify your identity.
The Definition of Memeingful
On November 27, 2008 — we created this “Memeingful” blog — even though “memeingful” was not a word at that time and meant nothing. We all knew what a “meme” was thanks to the genius of Richard Dawkins — but “memeingful” was intended to be a dizzy mix of Dawkins and knowing. We started this blog to create “meaning in the meme.”
The Definition of WordPunk
Creating ideas and words can help bring home a brand and emboss meaning in the atmosphere of the internet. When we started this WordPunk blog on August 11, 2007, we were hosted on TypePad and the word — “WordPunk” — really had no divine meaning or intended purpose.
Blog Comments or Formal Peer Review?
Noah Wardrip-Fruin poses a fascinating question on his blog: Is peer
review enough of a catchall against prejudice and misinformation; or
can adding blog readers to the process also help expand the
understanding of the author:
The blog-based review project started when Doug Sery, my editor at the MIT Press, brought up the question of who would peer-review the Expressive Processing
manuscript. I immediately realized that the peer review I most wanted
was from the community around Grand Text Auto. I said this to Doug, who
was already one of the blog’s readers, and he was enthusiastic. Next I
contacted Ben Vershbow at the Institute for the Future of the Book to
see if we could adapt their CommentPress tool for use in an ongoing
blog conversation. Ben not only agreed but also became a partner in
conceptualizing, planning, and producing the project. With the ball
rolling, I asked the Committee on Research of the University of
California at San Diego’s Academic Senate for some support (which it
generously provided) and approached Jeremy Douglass (of that same
university’s newly formed Software Studies initiative), who also became
a core collaborator — especially (and appropriately) for the
software-related aspects.

Over the past four years or so that I have been publishing this Urban Semiotic blog, I am always surprised to see unpublished comments from conservative religious readers who decide their best defense in the name of Jesus Christ is to insult me.
Moving Movable Type 4 to Media Temple
UPDATE: April 23, 2008. This Urban Semiotic blog — and all of David W. Boles’ domains and blogs are now solely hosted by Pair Networks! We will give you more information soon. We are leaving this article online to protect the chain of understanding and we will update this space as necessary.
As you know, we recently moved this Urban Semiotic blog from WordPress to Movable Type 4.1 and we were hosted by the fine folks at Pair Networks. We are grateful for their previous love and support as we announce today yet another move of this blog – as well as RelationShaping.com and WordPunk.com – over to my pre-existing Media Temple 3.5 dv-Rage server and Movable Type Open Source 4.1.
