Should Parenting Require Licensing?

There is no screening process involved in becoming a parent — all it takes is two people, not even necessarily in a relationship, and a sexual act that can take as little as a couple of minutes. From the act, nine or so months pass and a baby is born — and then you can get champion mothers like the one I recently observed on the train, yelling at her child while at the same time mostly ignoring her and listening to music on headphones and looking anywhere but the direction of her child.

Every generation of American children seems to be more guarded carefully than the last, and it is not ultimately beneficial to the children. The end result, I believe, is that the signal is sent out to the children that the world is a scary place of which they need to be fearful, and it is up to Big Brother to ban or outlaw anything that may hurt them.

Our children are not our friends.  We do not live to be liked by our children.  Our children are our vested interest to protect.  Our children must trust us.  We know more.  We are wiser.  We are required to give up our lives so that our children can live theirs in safety, comfort and within the proper context of society.  Parents are born to forbid their children and they must.

The Arrogant American: Bad Parenting Alone at Sea

Over the weekend, 16-year-old Abby Sunderland was plucked from the Indian Ocean by a French fishing vessel after she activated two emergency beacons indicating her ill-fated attempt to sail around the world alone as the youngest person — was over.  The caustic, and nearly fatal, irresponsibility of Abby’s parents — Laurence and Marianne Sunderland — earn them year’s award for Worst Parents Ever.
