Never as Sweet as the Memory

As I get older, I notice that things I once loved, and remembered with a philosophic passion, no longer measure up to the memory in reality. With the resurrection of old TV shows in expanded reruns on new cable channels like MeTV, old childhood favorites like “Wonder Woman” and “The Carol Burnett Show” and “The Incredible Hulk” are bitter comparisons to what they used to be in memory.

The Vile Artificiality in "Natural" Orange Juice

One of my fondest memories from my youth is from weekends, when part of the breakfast routine involved getting freshly squeezed orange juice. My mother would get oranges out of the refrigerator and take out the juice extractor which took the form of a small dark red plastic juicer which had a white pulp catcher that ended up being one of my favorite things — something about the delightful texture of the pulp mixed with the sweet orange flavor was really fantastic as a treat after I had the juice.

It is commonly used in diet soft drinks, and is often provided as a table condiment. It is also used in some brands of chewable vitamin supplements.

In the European Union, it is also known under the E number (additive code) E951. Aspartame is also one of the sugar substitutes used by diabetics. Nonetheless, aspartame has been a subject of a vigorous public controversy.

Prodding every word, insistent in its work

As they see merit
In what they feel
Those human words drifting the nights
To the delight of Holy Love
