Child Abuse and Fake Name Facebook Replies

There’s nothing quite so disturbing as posting an update on Facebook and then having a guy with a fake name try to take you on by defending — or “understanding,” as he put it — why a parent would strike a child because of stress.  I said then, and I say now, “I do not, and will never, understand why any parent would raise a hand to any child.”  I’m not being dramatic or presumptive.  I’m being factual.

It all started when I posted a link I posted to my article — How Home Foreclosures Trickle Down into Child Abuse — and the guy with the fake name put a comment on that update.  At first, I thought he was agreeing with me, but it turned out he was really defending the abuser, as you can see in the message stream:

How Home Foreclosures Trickle Down into Child Abuse

We already sadly know that fewer teachers lead to more high school dropouts and that, in turn, results in higher rates of incarceration that becomes a burden on taxpayers:

On any given day, about one in every 10 young male high school dropouts is in jail or juvenile detention, compared with one in 35 young male high school graduates, according to a new study of the effects of dropping out of school in an America where demand for low-skill workers is plunging. …

Yesterday, we learned a just as sad, but less astonishing, fact of the doldrums of inhuman nature:  Higher home foreclosure rates create an increase in child abuse:

Paterno as Sandusky Enabler: Now We Know at Penn State, Football was More Important than Morality

The Penn State child abuse cover up just got worse this morning with the not-so-unexpected revelation that Joe Paterno — and his beloved football program — were more important to the university than the welfare of innocent children:

“Our most saddening and sobering finding is the total disregard for the safety and welfare of Sandusky’s child victims,” said Louis J. Freeh, the former federal judge and director of the F.B.I. who oversaw the investigation. “The most powerful men at Penn State failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect the children who Sandusky victimized.”

Freeh’s investigation — which took seven months and involved more than 400 interviews and the review of more than 3.5 million documents — accuses Paterno, the university’s former president and others of deliberately hiding facts about Sandusky’s sexually predatory behavior over the years.

Joe Paterno Becomes the Goat and Begins to Pay Down His Real Legacy

There’s an old saying in the theatre: “Don’t Be the Goat!”

“Every production has a goat,” Dr. Stein would yell, “The goat gets the blame.  DON’T BE THE GOAT!”

Dr. Stein’s advice is timeless and excellent.  He wanted to make sure we were all appropriately trained to deal with anything and that we would always be able to work around any obstacle in a production so nobody could point a crooked finger us and say, “This is your fault,” thus making us, “The Goat.”

Sometimes you cannot avoid being labeled The Goat — it doesn’t mean you earned that title or that you did anything that deserves pointing — but the eternal fact in any production is that there must always be someone to blame.  Every show needs an unlucky totem.  Every show needs someone to kick when everyone is down.

Now that Joe Paterno is dead at 85, he will surely become in death what he never was in life:  The Goat.

The Irrevocable Moral Abyss: Berkshire Hathaway and the Tastelessness of GEICO Sushi

Berkshire Hathaway is one of those massive corporate behemoths that weighs down chairs and breaks tables when it sits down to commune with others in a room.  On May 11, 2011 I wrote an article about Berskhire Hathaway losing its moral value:

Fuddy Duddyism only goes so far in the mainstream cult of personality, and Warren Buffet can no long demand that people just “trust him” on anything anymore because Sokol singlehandedly ruined that reputation and opportunity.  Buffet, now 80-years-old, is in a tough place of his own making because he made the worst sort of bet on David Sokol that is now paying him back in backlash and derision — and there is rightly no escape from that public punishment and social scorn.

Today, I’m sorry to report, Berkshire Hathaway’s GEICO Insurance company has taken a step too far into mainstream television tastelessness with a new commercial selling fear and loathing with a grim and cynical smile.

Children Who Sue their Parents for the Wrong Reasons

There are many examples of what I consider to be really bad parenting out there. I have seen parents pushing their babies in strollers with one hand while smoking with another. I have heard of parents who do not ever make food for their children and instead take their children to fast food restaurants for every single meal. That is actually beyond bad parenting — it’s borderline child abuse, considering the ill effects that fast food have on the human body. When I see a parent walking around with their child on a so-called safety harness that looks more like taking your pets out for a walk than keeping them safe, I fear for the children and the caged mentality in which they seem to be raising their children.
