Hillary in the Moon

I subscribe to a cartoon syndicate, and every morning a bunch of great drawings land in my Inbox.  I have a few traditional cartoons, but most of the work that arrives is of political cartoons from across the world.  This morning, I was struck by this political cartoon from Kerry Waghorn, a real master combining the essence of a person with their mission on earth.  The image is Hillary Clinton’s face in the moon and three elephants sleeping on the ground below her.  One elephants longingly looks up at her.

The Post Office as the Last Great American Place

I am confounded by the hatred of the Post Office by Republicans.  There is nothing more American than the United States Postal Service.  I don’t understand why the GOP are so willing to kill a necessary, national, institution.  I love getting mail.  Yes, I pay my bills electronically, but I still send and receive lots of paper letters and cards. The latest game of the 2006 GOP is being played out in August of 2013 — and the horrible result is forcing the Post Office to cease Saturday mail delivery.  Email didn’t kill the mail — the fax machine didn’t kill the mail — the Republicans killed the mail.

Defending Clint Eastwood in Live Performance

I have been ruminating on the Clint Eastwood Empty Chair performance at Romney’s GOP convention, and I just can’t help loving what he was trying to do.  I’m not kidding or being facetious.  What Eastwood did was actually pretty brave and interesting and, while it didn’t really work out in the end — due to poor dramatic structure and lack of a button ending — it was still dangerous and exciting and absolutely real.

Romney Wants Fewer Teachers, Cops and Firefighters

The National Education Association is righteously furious over Mitt Romney’s want for fewer teachers, cops and firefighters:

GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney’s disdainful comments on Friday about needing fewer teachers, police officers and firefighters showed how out of touch he is with middle class America. Appearing today on “Fox News Sunday” with Chris Wallace, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, a high-profile Romney campaign supporter and potential candidate for vice president, continued the attack on working families when he called for the elimination of unions for teachers, police officers and firefighters.

“Mitch Daniels is wrong. America isn’t better off when teachers can’t advocate for their students or first-responders can’t negotiate for better training and more safety equipment—which could mean the difference between life and death,” said NEA President Van Roekel, who also appeared on the morning news program. “These divisive and politically motivated tactics Gov. Daniels is pushing to help the Romney campaign are disrespectful and demeaning to the people who teach our children, protect our communities and run into burning buildings to save lives.”

Oh, ugh.  Jeb Bush is back in our face this morning.  His family ruined our country and now he’s trying to play himself as the new, wild boar, voice of reason in a wildly unethical Republican Party.  Is anyone buying his new “reasonableness” — or do we all see precisely what he’s trying to do under the covers?

Do Republicans Want to Win the Presidential Election Next Year?

Debate after debate, advertisement after advertisement, confession after sordid confession, I have to really ask myself right now — does the Republican Party have any actual interest in winning the Presidential election next year? The answer seems to be no, and I submit the following reasons in the form of candidates past and present, whether actual candidates or just perceived by people (and the media) to be likely candidates.
