For nearly ten years I have eaten a strictly kosher diet. This has meant that when I enter a supermarket, I must carefully examine any product with which I am not familiar to see if is kosher certified. When I come across a product that is not certified that interests me, I do the following :
First, the cookies came out. They were loaded with eggs, milk, and not much positive. Then the drink cart rolled on through the aisle. I had brought a few sleeves of Starbucks Via and I thought asking for hot water, sugar, and soy milk would be okay. They didn’t have the soy milk, and so I had the coffee black but sweetened.
Watching Big Brother — the Original Televised Panopticonic Pabulum — is a seasonal ritual and last night, the show debuted season 12 on CBS at 8pm and during three hours of live feed on Showtime 2 at Midnight. The SHO2 feed started with an obnoxious bang as Andrew — “The Alleged Orthodox Podiatrist Jew” who claims to be kosher and observant and who says he cannot work from Sundown Friday to sundown Saturday — made a pure fool of himself.

Yesterday, we investigated the failure of Nebraska’s fiftieth out of fifty Safe Haven law to protect teenagers from dumping by misbegotten parents. Today, we learn about another Midwestern mudfest flinging scorn and rage against Somali Muslims who wish to say evening prayers during work hours at a Grand Island, Nebraska meatpacking plant. So far 86 people have been fired in this face off between commerce and religion.

Our Gordon Davidescu was lucky enough to get his hands on the coveted Gillette Fusion Power Razor as he told us yesterday:
At my supermarket they have a promotional item of the week. If they don’t mention it to you at the checkout counter and you point out that fact they have to give it to you for free. This week the promotional item was the Gillette Fusion Power. Since they didn’t mention it to me I got one for free. Since I can’t use it I’d like you to have it. At the very least you get an extra blade and coupon for $2 off the blades. How fun!
Three years and eleven days ago I wrote an article about the process by which I went from being a non-religious secular (or “cultural”) Jew to gradually becoming a more religiously observant one. It’s fascinating, to me, how much has really happened in this time period. As this article has been the most commented upon article I have ever written, I think the time has come for a follow-up.
