A Warning about Google Drive Local File Permissions and Web Publishing

Google Drive is one of the loves of my online life.  I store all my local files in my Google Drive Folder and that Google Drive Folder gets synced between here and the — out there — remote Google Drive.  I do all my writing and publishing via Google Drive.  I can find pretty much anything I want just by typing in a few keywords in Google Drive and I’m instantly presented with what I need.  Life is good that way!

However, I just discovered a permissions problem when it comes to using a local instance of Google Drive and a remote, third-party, website publisher, and I’ll share with you now what I learned, and how I fixed it.

Why the Boles Blogs Network Moved Back to WordPress.com After a Week of WordPress Multisite

WordPress.com backend billing problems temporarily forced the 14-blog strong Boles Blogs Network from the warmth and sanctity of WP.com and into the lonesome cold of independent WordPress Multisite hosting on my personal Pair Networks VPS.  After a week in the wilderness, we received word that our domain mapping renewals problem was fixed and we leapt back to WordPress.com.  This article will tell you why we decided to move back.

How to Migrate Your Blogs from WordPress.com to WordPress Multisite on Pair Networks VPS

UPDATE – April 9, 2012:  The Boles Blogs Network is now back on WordPress.com!  We will write another article explaining the why and how of moving back.  We’re leaving this article online because it might benefit someone else seeking to export their WP.com blog to a standalone WordPress installation.

Welcome to my first new article since the Boles Blogs Network had to leave our hosting setup on WordPress.com because of a strange billing anomaly that threatened the viability of our publishing network core.

Here’s what happened…

Two years ago, when I moved my blogs from a self-hosted Movable Type installation over to WordPress.com, I had the expert help of Automattic employee Lloyd Dewolf (Budd) — who is no longer with the company — to get all my thousands of posts imported into WordPress.com blogs.  As a blogs-warming gift, Lloyd waived the fee for domain mapping for the first year for all my imported blogs.  We added a few other blogs during that first year, and I paid the domain mapping fees.

A year passed.

I paid for another year of domain mapping upgrades for all 14 blogs.

Another year passed.

I am now unable to renew, and pay for, my domain mapping upgrades as you can see in the screenshot below.  There was a major “Upgrade” to the way WordPress.com now handles their shopping cart that somehow broke my ability to pay my way on the service. Notice there’s no “Renew Now” button for me to click for BolesBlues.com?  The domain mapping says it was purchased by “wpcomvip” and not me and that’s a problem.

How to Transfer a Domain from Network Solutions to pairNIC

I am a big fan of pair networks web hosting, and today, I am an even bigger fan of pairNIC — the domain registration arm of pair.  Ever since I’ve been on the internet, all of my domains have been registered with Network Solutions because, for many years, it was difficult to move your domains from one registrar to another — using an antiquated Ack-Back system was an invitation to make an irrevocable paper mistake — and only now is the domain transfer process more forgiving, but not necessarily easier, to make happen.  I’m going to step you through the process of transferring your domain from Network Solutions (NetSol) to pairNIC because you will save a lot of money and hassle if you follow me.

The pair Networks Virtual Private Server Review

All of my non-blog websites, and all my Boles Blogs Network images, are hosted on my private server.  Over the years, I’ve bounced around from webhost to webhost searching for the right fit.  In the past, I’ve tried LunarPages and Media Temple and Mosso (now rackspace CloudServers) found all of them lacking.  Then I happened upon pair Networks — located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — and I finally found the right webhost for me; I’ve been a proud, paying, pair Networks customer for over three years.

RelationShaping with David W. Boles

It is my honor and delight to announce today the creation of a new blog I’m writing — RelationShaping — where we try to give form and meaning to the way technology re-frames and transforms the human body in a relational universe.  Here’s our new semiotic semantic logo that serves our mission:  “The Spear of Technology Piercing the Body In Situ ->(” and we are grateful for your company.
