Finding Iced Coffee in New York City

I love coffee, and when the weather gets particularly warm I make the switch over to iced coffee — never mind the fact that I have been told for years that you should drink hot drinks when it is hot outside and cool drinks when it is cool. I prefer a cold drink. For the most part I have almost always gotten both kinds of coffee from Starbucks, which is quite easy when you’re in Manhattan — there is almost always one or five within a few blocks of your location.

The Over-Stimulated Brain in a Dead Mind

I spent most of last Sunday night slowly and steadily working through the heap of responsibilities that I had steadfastly ignored in favor of the weekend. I did this despite knowing the pitfalls of procrastination, and unsurprisingly, I was tired when I woke up in the morning. I walked to meet a friend for breakfast, silently bemoaning my terrible decision the whole way there, and when I arrived, she was not in much better shape. We exchanged mumbles, I admitted I’d brought this fate entirely on myself, and her reaction was misguided, although sympathetic: “You want an Adderall?”

How Sugar Fattens Your Liver Just Like Alcohol

Robert Lustig, M.D. is a terrific and insightful doctor who knows, and who has quantitatively proven, what the rest of us refuse to confess:  Sugar is killing us by fattening our livers from the inside.  We all know alcohol is bad for our bodies, and since alcohol is sugar, Dr. Lustig argues in his new book — “Fat Chance” — that the regular sugar we eat in our food can adversely affect our livers because of metabolic disease, just as if we were boozing it up all day long.

Christine Quinn Leading from Behind the SoundProof Room: When Five Paid Sick Days are Not Enough

A sad bit of history was made this week when New York City finally passed a law that requires businesses with at least 15 employees to provide five paid sick days a year.  Five.  Days.  Five days are not enough days to be out sick in a single year, especially in a living space jam-packed-with-people New York City — but at least its a start in a City that clearly has cared more about your cigarettes and sugar consumption and your Big Gulps than ever it did about actually giving you a few days off to heal while still being able to make the rent.

Sarah Palin Going Down on a Big Gulp

I was originally going to title this article — “Against Gullibility” — until I saw this image of Sarah Palin going down on a Big Gulp yesterday at the CPAC convention, and she wrote the new headline for me.  I couldn’t think of a better image to estimate just how low the political dialogue has dropped in the conservative coin of the realm.  Ms. Palin is sucking the very life out of us all.

The FDA Smacks Down "Corn Sugar"

I have my eye on you, high fructose corn syrup. I have seen the way that you have infiltrated our world and invaded so many of our food products from soda to bread. Bread! I had to throw out a half loaf of bread when I discovered that one of the ingredients was switched up on me from sugar to high fructose corn syrup. How dare you make the claim in your ads that you can enjoy it in moderation when it is in so many products?
