It’s been about a month since all 14 of our former network blogs, Urban Semiotic, Go Inside, Boles Blues, Panopticonic, Carceral Nation, Boles University Blog, 10txt, RelationShaping, United Stage, WordPunk, Memeingful, Scientific Aesthetic, Dramatic Medicine and Celebrity Semiotic became this Boles Blog. In that brief time, we’ve published over 80 new articles. That’s a World Publishing Record for any of our single blogs.
Okay! I’m “Old School” — actually, “Olde Skool,” and proud of it! The other day, I was in the WordPress.com support forum trying to help someone who was having Quotation Marks trouble, and I offered this bit of well-worn advice:
In my experience on WordPress.com, the quotation marks get turned around if you’re an old-school typist like me where you insert two spaces after a period — or somesuch — instead of one space. Removing the extra space usually rights the wrong-facing quote mark, and I only see the mistake when the post is published, not in either edit view.
Yes, I was self-identifying as “Olde Skool” — but I didn’t expect to have my label confirmed by WordPress.com staff! Ha!
I am not one to live in the past or have any regrets. History cannot be changed and regret only rots the promise of tomorrow. In putting together this new Boles Blog to reflect what came before in 14 other instances of thoughts and writing, I came upon the old Awards page for the now retired Go Inside Magazine; and I found great joy in looking back at those wildly created and brightly colored animated .GIFs, and I decided to share them with you here now. I moved the images off the now dead GoInside.com domain and placed them on the live Boles Books domain for serving, but I left the historical, clickable, URLs intact as a compendium of the greatest hits of what was, really, The Original Internet.
Do you recognize any of these websites? Animated .GIFs were big back in the mid-1990’s, and one good way to promote your new website was to “give an award” to another website — there were no blogs back then — and require a link back to your award website. The most elite award we won was from, at the time, the fledgling “Microsoft Network.” MSN was starting with a big bang and a booming promise and it was a Big Deal to get that congratulatory email from Microsoft telling us we were “The One” for a day. That single award from MSFT doubled our readership for the rest of our being.

As you may know, Boles Blogs is now a combination of 14 other blogs that used to make up the Boles Blogs Network. Everything is simpler, and more “findable” now that we’re all under the same mindset, and that’s a good and grand thing. We’re also now on the WordPress.com “Business” platform, and that bundling of valuable resources all in one place is one of the fine benefits of being hosted on WordPress.
One of the chits of the Business platform is having free and unfettered access to any and all “Premium” WordPress.com themes. We are currently using the keen and very clean premium “Elemin” theme you can see in the screenshot below. I’m viewing the page in the Chrome browser for Mac:
