The Farce of Busy Lifestyle Syndrome

Medical fakery has a sadly long history going back to snake oil salesmen and going on even until this day. Many times, the lies that are sold to us by those who purport to only have healing in mind for us are made because the truths would be far too difficult for us to digest. If you have been wondering why you may have trouble remembering things more now than ever in this Age, there is now apparently a syndrome custom-made just for you — Busy Lifetime Syndrome!

2012 in Review

The year 2012 went by rather quickly for me — one day at a time, as it were. It was a year of many moments spent with my wife and son and remarkably not too many spent attending concerts and movies as in years prior to Chaim being born — but we are quite okay with it and know that it too shall pass and we will eventually have a sitter over more than once every half a year or so.

A Modest Proposal: The Clean Streets Brigade

I would like to make what I feel is a modest proposal that will help make the streets a bit cleaner if not entirely clean. I walk the streets every day from when I go to the synagogue in the morning, often in the dark, until I am walking back home at night. I encounter far too much trash along the way, seemingly no matter what route I choose. There is, unfortunately, only so much that I am able to pick up and relocate in the proper receptacles. We can ask ourselves why the streets are so dirty but knowing the answer today won’t make them any cleaner tomorrow.

Assault on Literature through 50 Shades of Yuck

There is a new assault on literature and it comes as a direct result of the garbage that passes itself off as a book series called Fifty Shades of Grey. After tremendous sales of the book series, adult fiction publishers are looking at the classic literature of the past for their way to big profits in the future. Rather than writing fully new works of fiction, the publisher will take existing classic novels such as Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights and insert numerous sex scenes where the original author had none.

I fully understand that the expression “Sex sells!” has much validity especially in a world where people can click a link on their smart phones and get a dose of Wuthering Heights with sex scenes added in seconds — but just because you can do it does not mean that you should. In this case I think that the classic works of literature should be left undisturbed, so that people can read them as they were written.

Human Equality Should Not Be Headline News

Every time a celebrity comes out of the closet and it is spread all over the blogosphere and makes the front cover of entertainment magazines, I pretty much always have the same reaction — to think to myself, “Why is this still considered newsworthy?” I would like to take you more thoroughly through this thought process with me.

From Inspiring Hope to Big Dopey Dope: Ten Sentence Story #173

For the longest time, I was incredibly inspired by the story of Lance Armstrong — the man who survived testicular cancer and won race after race, seemingly unbeatable.

He was a tremendous winner and the foundation that he created raised well over five hundred million dollars for cancer research.

Finding Inspiration in the Formerly Poor

When I was a child my mother told me that it was very easy to look up and see all of the people who were doing better than us but that it was important to look down, so to speak, and to see the people who were worse off. When we make our way through this often harsh and does not let us settle for just trying our best we sometimes do well to find role models — people who have managed to accomplish what we hope to one day accomplish and emulate them or find hope for ourselves. If that person could make it, I can make it as well.
