Why The Daily Fails on the iPad

I haven’t always been sure about the benefits of the iPad as a computing platform, but I soon realized why the iPad is the future of learning and social interaction.  Rupert Murdoch’s — The Daily — appeared for the first time yesterday as the new “news standard” for entertainment on my iPad for a price of 99 cents a week or $40.00USD per year after an introductory two week free trial.  I am underwhelmed by The Daily and I don’t expect it to last very long, even though Murdoch says he spent $30 million on the effort.

djay for iPad Review

All week I’ve been reading the stellar, Five Star, reviews and comments for djay for the iPad and — even though I’m not a big “records guy” — I decided to take the $20.00USD plunge and purchase the App.

The AmpliTube and iRig for iPad Review

If you love playing the electric guitar, and if you live in an urban core where you can’t dial all knobs to 10 on you amp, then you will enjoy AmpliTube and iRig for your iPad.  You get probably $15,000.00USD worth of stompboxes and amps and microphones for around $60.00USD.  You need to spend $20.00USD to buy the AmpliTube App from the iTunes store.  Don’t download the free version.  Just pony up the dough for the full-service AmpliTube that includes all the pedals without having to buy them one-by-one for $3.00USD.  Then you need to buy the $40.00USD iRig adapter from a music store that will allow you to connect your guitar to your iPad.

Accepting Square Payments on Your iPhone: The Review

Square is a new financial service that allows you to charge credit cards on your iPhone or iPad and the whole idea is really quite brilliant.  At first blush, you might not understand why you would want to collect credit card payments if you use PayPal or some other online banking service — but if you think about your work day and how you interact with others in a business and personal sense — Square is giving you a cash register in the palm of your hand to facilitate credit card transactions just as if you had a storefront location.  After verifying your vitals on the Square website, you can begin accepting credit card transactions on your iOS device.  You mange your account online.  Each week, Square will deposit up to $1,000.00USD into your bank account.  Square’s vig for swiped credit cards is 2.75% +15 cents and 3.5% + 15 cents for keyed-in credit cards.

The Comcast Xfinity iPad App Review

Sometimes Comcast does the right thing.  They recently upped their HDTV content and this week they released a new iOS App called — “Xfinity TV” — that lets you control your DVR and HDTV cable boxes from your iPad!

Electroshock Therapy and My Amazon Kindle

I used to think my Amazon Kindle was a SuperStar!  Then the Kindle DX crashed my party, and I swore I’d never buy another Kindle — and I have not.  I read Kindle books on my iPhone and on my delightful iPad.  I like a bright, backlit, screen because I spend a lot of time in dark places like theatres and dank basements and editing rooms and recording bays — so the Kindle’s need for direct light in order to be read is a real problem for me — especially eyes age and the need for greater illumination grows.  I still use my Kindle to occasionally browse the sale rack on Amazon, and that means I have to infrequently recharge my Kindle.  The other day, when I plugged my Kindle in to the Amazon power source shown in the image below, I got a mild tingling in my fingers:  My Kindle electroshocked me!  My eyes rolled back into my head as I shook off the bite.

The Best Apple Store Support Story Ever Told

We know the iPhone hates sweaty hands.  Now I can confirm for you that the iPad is also averse to large, sweaty, men — sort of like the one you see below — unapologetically lurking on the New York City subway system.

The Springpad for iPhone Review

I have been advised by many people in my life that the best way to keep myself focused and organized on a day-to-day, week to week and greater basis is to keep a to-do list. When I was younger I had a paper planner that had a special section meant for to-do lists. Unfortunately, I failed one of the basic tenets of to-do lists which is that a to-do list is not much use if you don’t check it a few times a day — otherwise, how will you make sure you are doing what you need to do?

Charging Your iPhone with a Finger Swipe

Today, Apple will reveal the new iPhone HD, and while some online sites are celebrating the future possibility of charging your future iPhone via the sunshine, I still don’t think that’s green enough.
