When you put them together on stage — it happened in February of 2008 at Madison Square Garden in New York City — you get 50 years of cascading Blues that have defined the hopes and emotions of three generations.

Nina Simone is one of our must unappreciated and undervalued Blues voices. Evidence of such is found in the lack of instant recognition when you invoke her name and in the fact that her ovaric album of 50 songs and a video found in — “The Definitive Rarities Collection” — is currently selling for an incredibly cheap $7.99USD in the American iTunes store. That’s less than 15-cents per song!
I don’t know if the rise in a bad economy is responsible for a similar rise in Bad Voice Mail Performance — but there has to be a correlation somewhere!
One would think that anarchy in a live theatre setting would be the perfect place to start a political movement or to make sea changes against the current societal norm but history proves few audiences are moved into immediate action based on a live interaction with stage performers.

At Columbia University in the City of New York, the unconquerable and indefatigable Dr. Howard Stein, would beg his graduate Playwriting students to never be “The Goat” on any production.
Any performance — live or “recorded live on tape” — is nothing without tension. The live stage is filled with tension because of its unique requirement of being presented in live time while anything can happen.
We’ve been wondering a lot about The Blues as we form our practice and performance and there is an essence of the music that to speaks to us on a deeper level than any other sort of music.
