Staying Vegan at 30,000 Feet

First, the cookies came out. They were loaded with eggs, milk, and not much positive. Then the drink cart rolled on through the aisle. I had brought a few sleeves of Starbucks Via and I thought asking for hot water, sugar, and soy milk would be okay. They didn’t have the soy milk, and so I had the coffee black but sweetened.

Why I Am Still Vegan After a Decade of Service

On December 6, 1998, my wife Janna and I began to serve the Vegan lifestyle.  I say “serve” because being Vegan can be a lonesome service to a greater cause as everyone around you devours animals and wears their skins.

The Feed Granola Review

As someone who has recently gone vegan I have been reaching out for new and exciting foods to eat. While I am not quite ready for an 80/10/10 diet with almost nothing but fruit, I do like finding foods that I can eat in the morning.

Saucony Jazz Sneaker Review

I have never been much of a picky shopper when it came to shoes. When I was a child I always wanted to get the “popular” shoes but never got anything overpriced as that was just outrageous and not to be considered. In the last few years this has translated into my only buying shoes from such places as Zappos and warehouse store locations, never paying more than one hundred dollars for a pair of shoes. I certainly did not think that I would ever buy a pair of shoes based on an e-mail message from a record store.

Eating Your Patients

Do you think all Veterinarians should be required to be vegetarians?

Tofurkey Time!

Today we will be chowing down on a ball of Tofurkey stuffed with stuffing. Tofurkey is a semi-delicious,Tofurkey! Vegan, fat-free “turkey replacement” and it is quite delish.

Some people who still eat turkey sometimes ask those of us who don’t eat animals why we would choose to eat an “animal replacement” that tastes like the meat we are trying to avoid.

To those silly few my answer to their inquiry is this: “You obviously haven’t tried Tofurkey, because if you had, you’d know it tastes nothing like turkey!”

There are many Vegans among us who are unable to enjoy the soy health benefits of Tofurkey because of its peculiar taste, and we do pity those poor few as we slice and dice our hot and juicy ball of tofu — all in the name of celebrating the land and delighting in grand company.

I am Doctor Dolittle

We already know I am irresistable to people but today I realized I am Doctor Dolittle, too. When I go on my daily powerwalk I am greeted by many non-people — dogs on leashes, cats in windows, ferrets in cages, birds in trees, worms on sidewalks, snails on drainpipes — they all come to me as I walk by them. This didn’t used to happen.

The New York City Vegan Guide to the Lower East Side

On the six month anniversary of my becoming The Virgin Vegan I decided to compile a list of Vegan-friendly restaurants in my neighborhood. When I say “The Lower East Side” I mean anywhere in that area you can reach in 15 minutes or less on foot.

Review Lights
I will rate each Vegan hangout based on food, atmosphere and value for the price. Each place will be evaluated on the standard system of one to five Go Inside Magazine Review Lights. Five green GO lights are best while all red STOP lights are the worst. I’ll place a text tag under the Review Lights so you’ll know the colors of the lights in case you choose to print out this review on a black and white printer that doesn’t have great greyscale ability. I will update this article as new places to eat Vegan are discovered.

Angelica Kitchen
12th Street Betwixt First & Second Avenue

With a guarantee of over 95% of their food being organic, you can’t beat Angelica Kitchen for a sublime experience if you’re eating in or taking out. The marinated tofu sandwich is a daily staple along with their sea vegetables, mashed potatoes with brown rice gravy and the Wee Dragon Bargain. Their sweet muffins are a heavy, heavenly delight. Their salads are to die for. Every other Vegan joint in town bows down to Angelica Kitchen as they rightly should. Angelica is expensive, though. You’ll pay around $35 for a good dinner for two. The atmosphere is relaxed and homey. They blessedly deliver to most of the Lower East Side.

Veganism Lowers Blood Cholesterol Levels

While April may be the month for Fools, I can tell you it’s no joke that living a Vegan lifestyle can lower your cholesterol. While your mileage may vary, I’m living testimony that Veganism — mixed with daily, moderate, low-impact, exercise — can lower your blood cholesterol level from a high risk ratio to a moderate one.

Birkenstocks for Vegans

During my old university days, the hepcat footwear to wrap around your feet year round were Birkenstock sandals (with or without socks). As a Virgin Vegan, I’m thrilled to report that Birkenstock not only provide a wide range of cruelty-free and animal-free products, they are proud of this fact and want to get the word out to everyone, not just folks in the Vegan community.
