The internet has decided that modern humans are developing zoochosis, the madness of caged animals. The claim is older than TikTok, and the truth underneath it is more uncomfortable than either the believers or the scoffers want it to be. For most of the 1990s, the most famous resident of the Central Park Zoo was a 700-pound polar bear named Gus who spent up to twelve hours a day swimming the same figure eight through the same small pool. Back and forth. The same loop, traced into the water until it wore a groove in the day. Reporters called him neurotic, depressed, flaky, and bipolar, and New Yorkers half-adopted him as a mascot for their own condition. In 1994 the zoo paid an animal behaviorist twenty-five thousand dollars to find out what was wrong, and the verdict passed into legend. Gus, the behaviorist said, was bored and mildly crazy in the way that a lot of people in New York are. The zoo redesigned his habitat, hid his food inside blocks of ice, gave him toys, and made him the first zoo animal in recorded history to be put on Prozac. The swimming eased. It never fully stopped. Until the day he died in 2013, there were afternoons when Gus would throw himself back into the water and trace the loop again, and again, and again.

That bear has a diagnosis, and the diagnosis has a name: zoochosis.

The word was coined in 1992 by Bill Travers, the British actor turned animal advocate who co-founded the Born Free Foundation. He used it for the repetitive, unvarying, apparently functionless behaviors that captive wild animals develop and that free animals never show: the pacing tiger wearing a track into the dirt, the elephant swaying and head-bobbing for hours, the great ape biting the bars, the parrot plucking itself bald, the orca grinding through its eternal circle. Travers built a 1993 film, the Zoochotic Report, out of footage from more than one hundred zoos across three continents, and he reported seeing abnormal behavior in every single one. The pattern clusters in the animals you would predict: elephants, bears, big cats, apes, giraffes, and orcas, the wide-ranging and socially complex species whose enclosures bear the least resemblance to the lives they evolved to live.

The mechanism is not mysterious. An animal built across millions of years to walk forty miles, to hunt, to choose its mate, and to hold a territory gets placed in a space that is a rounding error against its range. Laurel Braitman, who wrote the book Animal Madness, calculated that Gus’s five-thousand-square-foot enclosure came to less than one ten-thousandth of one percent of his natural Arctic range. The drives have nowhere to go, so they misfire. They turn inward, and they curdle into the loop. A peer-reviewed review in the Journal of Wildlife and Biodiversity notes the obvious and disturbing parallel: the self-biting and self-mutilation of caged animals look a great deal like self-injurious behavior in people. The animal-pharmaceutical business that grew up to manage all this now runs to tens of billions of dollars, and fluoxetine, the generic of Prozac, ships in flavors matched to whatever you are dosing, from peanut butter for the family dog to triple fish for the serious carnivore. Zoos stay quiet about the practice, because a sedated animal photographs as a contented one.

Here is where the internet walks in. Search zoochosis on TikTok and you will find north of thirteen million posts gathered around a single idea: the bear in the pool is no longer only the bear. The claim, spreading through Gen Z creators, digital-minimalism accounts, and a thick seam of urban-burnout commentary, runs like this. Modern humans live in cages too, and we are starting to pace. The apartment becomes the enclosure, and so does the cubicle. A phone is the feeding button, dispensing small chemical rewards on an unpredictable schedule, the way a slot machine does, the way an enrichment puzzle drops a treat when the captive animal finally solves it. Doomscrolling becomes the figure eight, traced on glass instead of water. The compulsive thumb, the refresh, the orbit back to the same four apps, the low steady hum of notification and deadline and surveillance: people are reading all of it as the human translation of bar-biting and weaving. Some versions sharpen into something close to conspiracy and ask whether the antidepressants prescribed to tens of millions of adults are doing for us exactly what the Prozac did for Gus, quieting a creature that is reacting normally to an abnormal cage.

None of this began with the smartphone. In 1969 the zoologist Desmond Morris, fresh off the runaway success of The Naked Ape, published a book called The Human Zoo and made the comparison the whole argument. His framing is the seed of every video in the genre. Some people call the city a concrete jungle, he wrote, yet jungles are not crowded; the crowded animals are the ones in cages. From that single observation he drew the line that gave the book its title and named the entire idea: the human inhabitants of a city are the animal inhabitants of a zoo. Both have their food and shelter handed to them and time on their hands. Both are dropped into an environment they did not evolve for, and they pay for it in their social lives, their boredom, and their capacity for cruelty. Morris pushed well past the everyday quirks of status and fashion into the worst of human behavior, reading addiction, fanaticism, and certain kinds of violence as the deformed output of ancient instincts that modern life gives no honest outlet. The book sold enormously. It also drew, even in 1969, the exact accusations leveled at its descendants today: tidy storytelling, claims that cannot be falsified, and a romance about a natural human past that never existed.

The idea refuses to die because a real and active body of science sits underneath the metaphor. It carries the name evolutionary mismatch, and it holds a respectable address in the literature. The core proposition, formalized by the evolutionary biologists George Williams and Randolph Nesse around 1991, states something simple. A trait that helped your ancestors survive can turn harmful when the environment changes faster than biology can follow. The moth evolved to steer by the moon and now spirals into a porch light. The human evolved a craving for sugar and fat in a world where calories were scarce and dangerous to win, and now lives inside a vending machine. Your genome was built, by the best estimates, for the small, mobile, face-to-face foraging bands in which the species spent the overwhelming majority of its existence, a setting researchers call the environment of evolutionary adaptedness. Drop that genome into a hierarchical office, a feed of ten thousand strangers, and a city that never goes dark, and some of the machinery starts to misfire.

What lifts this above a hunter-gatherer daydream is that the mismatch frame keeps earning its keep in clinical research. Papers in evolutionary medicine argue that depression and several anxiety disorders may be the dysregulated edges of systems that once served us well: a mood that tuned how hard you chased a goal, a fear that kept you alive, now firing too often or for too long against triggers it was never calibrated to face. A 2016 paper in Evolution, Medicine, and Public Health sets out depression and anxiety as the maladaptive byproducts of adaptive mechanisms. A 2025 framework in Current Psychology presses harder and makes the zoo connection explicit, and it does so in the same breath as the animal evidence: mental disorders are rare in wild animals and common in laboratory and zoo animals, which is the precise pattern the mismatch hypothesis predicts. Cross-cultural data point the same direction. Surveys of the few surviving societies that still live something close to a foraging life keep finding the modern epidemic of anxiety and depression to be thin on the ground.

There is even hard intervention evidence on the cage the trend cites most, the screen. Randomized controlled trials of brief digital-detox periods have measured real drops in anxiety and depression scores when young adults cut their device use for a couple of weeks. The feeding-button metaphor, put another way, has a testable core, and when researchers test it, something is in fact there.

So the believers hold a genuine hand. Honesty demands the rest of the accounting, and the case thins out fast the moment you leave the science and step into the meme.

Start with the part the romantics never want to hear. The ancestral world that evolutionary mismatch invokes was no meadow of well-adjusted people living in harmony with nature. Child mortality was brutal, starvation arrived in seasons, injuries went untreated, and raiding and interpersonal violence ran at rates that would empty a modern city. The clinicians who use the mismatch lens are usually careful to say so. The viral version almost never is. When a creator tells you that you were meant to run free and that the fix is to quit your job and walk into the trees, that creator has quietly swapped a narrow scientific claim about specific mismatched traits for an old and seductive myth about a lost natural paradise. Anthropologists who study how this argument travels have a sharp name for the maneuver: mismatch rhetoric works by exploiting how little its audience knows about the real human past, and it slides, nearly every time, from describing a problem to prescribing a way of life.

The history of leaping from caged animals to human civilization should give the trend further pause, because it has gone badly wrong before. In the early 1960s a researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health named John Calhoun built a series of rodent enclosures with unlimited food, water, and nesting material and only one scarce resource, space. His most famous version, Universe 25, climbed to roughly two thousand mice and then collapsed into total extinction. Along the way the animals produced a grim catalog: males that turned violent or quit mating, mothers that abandoned their pups, and a withdrawn caste Calhoun called the beautiful ones, who did nothing but eat, sleep, and groom in isolation. He named the breakdown a behavioral sink, and he invited the human comparison openly, telling audiences that he would speak largely of mice while his thoughts were on man. The culture obliged. Tom Wolfe wrote an essay about a rat-sick New York and called it “O Rotten Gotham,” and the experiment fed a decade of overpopulation dread. Then the science caught up. Researchers who hunted for the same effects in people found mixed results at best, and modern reanalysis traces the colony’s collapse less to raw density than to the design of the pen, which let a few aggressive males seize the prime territory and lock everyone else out. Humans, the obvious objection runs, build upward, outward, and online; we are not trapped in a fixed box; we are not mice. An animal model is a loaded instrument. Aimed at a whole society, it tends to return whatever the person already feared, which is why Calhoun’s mice are quoted today by population doomers and by men’s-rights agitators who see the beautiful ones in every childless city. That is the warning his experiment still carries, and the human-zoochosis trend has not heard it.

Then there is what the metaphor does to actual illness. Clinical depression and anxiety disorders are conditions with genetics, biochemistry, and enormous variation from one person to the next. Folding all of it into one tidy story, that we are merely caged animals pacing the glass, can comfort a person who feels trapped, and it can also flatten a serious medical condition into an aesthetic, a vibe, a thing you treat by deleting an app and booking a cabin weekend. The mismatch researchers themselves describe their work as a lens, one useful question among many, never the whole picture. The viral version tends to keep the certainty and drop the humility.

Watch, too, who collects the money. The same logic that names your life a cage powers a wellness economy that turns around and sells you the key: the detox retreat, the dumbphone, the screen-time app that charges a monthly fee to help you use your screen less, the grounding mat, the forest-bathing package. A darker note hums under the conspiracy strain of the trend. The charge that zoos drug their animals to fake contentment is largely true, and the people making it then aim it at human psychiatry as though a prescription for a diagnosed disorder were the same act of cover-up. That move is dishonest, and it is dangerous. It tells a suffering person that the medication keeping them functional is a sedative meant to keep them docile in the enclosure, which is the kind of idea that gets people to stop taking medicine they need.

So: true, or reactionary? Picking one is the lazy answer. The question itself is built wrong, because it bundles three separate claims that deserve separate grades.

As biology, the mismatch claim is serious, and in its careful forms it is well-supported. Human beings carry minds shaped for a world that no longer exists, and the friction between that inheritance and the world we built is a real source of suffering that serious researchers study with serious methods. Grant that in full.

As metaphor, zoochosis is useful and a little dangerous. The image of the pacing bear hands people a fast, humane way to understand why a comfortable life can still feel like a slow emergency, and that is worth something. The hazard is that a metaphor explains nothing on its own. It only feels like an explanation, and the feeling runs so satisfying that it can shut down the harder thinking at the exact moment the harder thinking should begin.

As a viral movement, the thing is mostly reactionary, and reactionary in the strict sense of the word: it reacts. It takes a real ache, the exhaustion of living inside systems that were never designed around human limits, and converts that ache into a posture, a content category, a marketplace, and on occasion a reason to distrust the medicine and the institutions a person actually relies on. It mistakes a mood for a finding, and hands a real wound a costume where it needs a treatment.

Gus got a redesigned pool, frozen fish to dig for, and a drug, and his swimming eased without ever quite ending. His figure eight teaches something more demanding than the meme allows. The bear could not redesign his own enclosure or interrogate the people who built it. A human can. We are the strange animal able to look straight at the cage, name the bars, argue over which ones hold up the roof and which ones we hung ourselves, and pull some of them down. Calling that work zoochosis is a fair way to begin the conversation. Stopping there, content with the diagnosis and the merchandise, is a way of staying in the pool.
